Toyota enthusiasts may finally get their wish with the next generation Tundra powered by a Cummins 5.0L V8 turbo diesel. An insider source to Wards Auto says that Toyota has been developing an in-house turbo diesel with Hino in 2007 but had halted the project due to the economic downturn. Toyota was serious about the light duty truck market as they built a Tundra Diesel Dually concept truck for the 2008 SEMA Show.
With tougher CAFE standards set for the future, Toyota must offer a diesel variant with better MPG to meet the guidelines. Toyota is no stranger to the light-duty truck market as they used to offer a one ton dually version of the legendary HiLux pickup truck. You always saw these dually Toyotas as mini U-Haul moving vans, utility truck, stakebed or a micro-mini RV. Although the news is not official, a light-duty turbo diesel Tundra is a necessity for Toyota to stay competitive in this market dominated by Ford, Chevy and Dodge. Bring on the Tundra Heavy Duty series with the Cummins Turbo Diesel!
