For years Toyota Racing Development has enhanced Toyota products from an aesthetic and performance standpoint. On February 6, Toyota is going to introduce a new “TRD Pro” line of vehicle at the Chicago Auto Show. A video has recently been posted up showing three different Toyota models trailblazing through the desert. In the video, quick teasers show enhanced versions of Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner. Just a few days ago, Toyota USA posted a teaser image of a 4Runner with TRD Pro badging and blacked out TRD wheels kicking up sand. Our friends at Autoguide are guessing that the Tundra in this video could be a Ford SVT Raptor-fighting competitor.
No details have been given on what TRD Pro will entail but it appears these enhancements are off-road themed. Toyota first offered a TRD Off Road package on the first generation Tacoma Pre-Runner & 4WD models with an enhanced suspension featuring Bilstein shocks. There was an available TRD Supercharger for the 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 which was available for both the Tacoma and second generation 4Runner. Like the Tacoma the first generation Tundra also adopted a TRD Off Road Package as well as a street version called the TRD Sport Package. TRD offered a supercharger for the 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 as well an array of engine and suspension parts.
Currently there are TRD Supercharger kits for both the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 in the Tacoma and the 3UR-FE 5.7L V8 for the Tundra. There are also a plenty of TRD accessories for both. None of these TRD supercharger kits were ever packaged straight from the port or factory, but perhaps this may change with a decked out TRD Pro package. I certainly hope so.
